Located 16 miles south west of Chicago, Bedford Park is a village in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 580 at the 2010 census. Bedford Park consists of a small residential area and vast amounts of heavy industry sprawling to the east and a small amount to the west.

The R&D Tool Shop moved from our Bridgeview Facility to its current location in 2009 and was renamed the Innovation Center. The facility houses 22 CNC Machine Tools, a prototype center, and various grinding and assembly equipment. The Innovation Center has approximately 30 shop employees as well as product and tool designers, project managers and Corporate Engineering staff. The Innovation Center earned Pactiv’s annual Safety and Environmental awards for the past three years with zero incidents.

Job Description:

  • Manages the development and engineering of packages to ensure both aesthetic and objectives are met.

  • Manage the evaluation and selection of packaging materials, packaging equipment, and processes that meet functional cost and consumer requirements.

  • Manage large scale optimization/cost reduction projects while working with cross functional teams.

  • Create and validate packaging specifications and possess spec approval responsibility for technicians and engineers, both in headquarters and in supplier production facilities.

  • Execute appropriate packaging testing as required (ship testing, compatibility, resistance, etc.).

  • Provide guidance to matrix teams as subject matter expert for packaging technologies and materials.

  • Responsible for coordinating graphics for corrugate and film.

  • Create and approve source documents such as cost investigation, package profile, preliminary specifications, tooling/part qualification and final package components specification.

  • Acts as internal consultant providing technical guidance on the most complex projects and problems by applying creativity, innovation, tools, methods, and techniques integrated with technical insights, knowledge and experience to form conclusions and resolutions.

  • Recognizes challenges in technical platform and engages a variety of resources (internal and external) to consistently overcome the most challenging technical problems.

  • In locations where applicable, responsible to comply with all plant safety rules and GMP practices and programs to ensure safe food packaging product and to report food safety problems to those with authority to take action.

  • Size, scope and complexity of assigned portfolio are factors in the level of responsibility.


  • BS degree in Packaging Engineering preferred, or equivalent in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.

  • 4+ years of related professional Engineering experience in the CPG industry.

  • Proven background as a technical expert.

  • Demonstrated experience and application of complex concepts, practices and procedures within particular engineering field.

  • Proficient in SAP.

  • Proficient in PEG and/or other packaging software.

  • Self-directed with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple accountabilities and multiple internal customers.

  • Strong analytical skills as well as organizational skills and high attention to detail.

  • Solid project management capabilities with the ability to organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously from origin through execution.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule during key business deadlines.

  • Must be team oriented with the ability to work on high collaboration and performance teams.

  • Any graphic experience is a plus
