135 miles west of Charlotte, NC, 277 miless east of Nashville, TN, and 178 miles northeast of Atlanta, GA, Canton is the second largest town in Haywood County, North Carolina. It is located about 17 miles west of Asheville and is part of that city's metropolitan area. The town is named after the city of Canton, Ohio. The population was 4,227 at the 2010 census.

The Evergreen Packaging Canton Paper Mills is located in Canton North Carolina, in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, less than half an hour from the city of Asheville and its cultural benefits. It is one of the largest industrial employers in western North Carolina. Opened in 1908, Canton produces paperboard for refrigerated gable-top cartons, cupstock and uncoated freesheet for envelopes. The Canton Mill employs approximately 1000 team members and has played a significant role in the environmental and social history of the area. Started by Canton Mill employees in 1928 and completely funded by employees, Santa Pal is a tradition that last year distributed 600 food boxes to underprivileged families and helped clothe 500 local children in need.

Job Summary: Manage and lead the hourly maintenance employees to meet the safety, environmental, production, quality and cost for Pulp, WTTP, Chips within the maintenance department. This position is responsible for labor relations, quality, production, cost improvement and performance measurement of production.

Essential Functions:

  • Ensure a safe work environment for employees and through leadership instill an employee involved safety approach.

  • Supervise, direct, and coordinate the mechanical maintenance employees engaged in maintenance activities in the department.

  • Insure that hourly maintenance employees are trained, knowledgeable and that they adhere to mill safety policies and regulations.

  • Responsible for effective employee relations. Provides employee coaching and development. Resolves employee issues through problem resolution and contract language. Ensure hourly employees have proper training and tools to meet department goals.

  • Coordinate with Production in preparing maintenance outages, daily work schedules and preventative maintenance activities and insuring proper manning to execute.

  • Coordinate outside contractors and consultants as needed to ensure reliability is maintained and to address manpower deficiencies.

  • Drive continuous improvement through reliability efforts and root cause failure analysis.

  • Coordinate maintenance spending with operations and maintenance superintendent to adhere to budget. Assist in the development of yearly maintenance plan.

  • Manage timekeeping, vacation scheduling, and other activities as they arise.

  • Fill vacancies of the area maintenance planner and the area maintenance superintendent.

  • Develop operating, process, and reliability improvements through innovation.

  • Manage and coordinate project work involving external contractors.

Required Skills:

  • Working knowledge of equipment used to operate power boilers, turbine generators, mill air system, mill water and chlorination system, belt conveyor delivery, and boiler feed water treatment systems.

  • Proficient in basic computer skills and Microsoft Office applications and use of Internet to search.

Preferred Skills:

  • Technical 4 year degree - BSME or BSEE preferred.

  • Prior supervisory experience with an hourly work force in a union work environment.

  • Working knowledge of SAP maintenance workflow software or similar.

  • Working knowledge of Results Oriented Reliability and Maintenance Programs.

  • Working knowledge of PI and/or Process Book for operational monitoring and equipment troubleshooting.
