Sr. Packaging Engineer- Automation
Summary of the Position:
This particular position is part of our Engineering Group and supports Packaging needs for new and existing Automation equipment. The Sr. Packaging Engineer- Automation develops and designs packaging materials and equipment for safe, convenient and attractive transport of goods under a variety of conditions and ensures compliance with manufacturing, customer service objectives & standards.
As a Sr. Packaging Engineer, you will work closely with the plant teams and cross-functional groups to bridge the gap between packaging, automation, production, maintenance, process engineering, quality, and IT within the plants and to corporate. This packaging role will also have a large focus on aiding in the specification of equipment and systems, data collection and analytics for packaging with automation.
Provides recommendations to management on new and modified automation packaging options, including evaluating packaging needs; analyzing alternatives; setting specifications and standards; developing cost analyses; communications with suppliers, vendors, and preparing an implementation plan that correlates with equipment installation timing.
Oversees and coordinates the prototype systems and package designs by defining tasks, assessing risks, establishing parameters, identifying materials and analyzing transporting methods to prevent potential damage or contamination with any new and existing equipment.
Defines requirements and conducts primary and secondary packaging audits, including conducting packaging trials, setting specifications needed for incoming and finished packaging materials, and establishing pallet configurations to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards and project objectives.
Oversees and coordinates the integration of final packaging, including automation capability, new products, labels, graphics.
Provides training to QA staff and other personnel to ensure understanding of packaging specifications as designed.
Conducts benchmark studies of industry packaging capabilities in order to identify most effective and efficient approach to integrating new and existing packaging with automation equipment.
Performs other related and assigned duties as necessary.
Bachelor’s degree in packaging engineering or equivalent from an accredited college or university.
10+ years of relevant work experience.
Strong project and process management skills
Strong communication skills
Understanding of current and new automation equipment on the market
Interpret automation anomalies or irregularities as it pertains to packaging
Technical characteristics of packaging and measurement techniques
Excellent problem solving and analysis skills
Moderate understanding of manufacturing business operations and supply chain management
Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project Management)
Knowledge of CAD, TOPS
